The FBI and Microsoft seized more than 100 web domains.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) unsealed a warrant on Thursday authorizing the seizure of 41 internet domains, all of which were alleged to be used by Russian intelligence agents to commit fraud in the United States. The DOJ also authorized Microsoft to take control of 66 domains under the same operation. These actors either belonged to or worked for the “Callisto Group,” a hacking operation within the Russian Federal Security Service, and they used these websites to launch widespread spear-phishing campaigns to obtain account information from U.S. citizens and employees of the federal government.
“The Russian government ran this scheme to steal Americans’ sensitive information, using seemingly legitimate email accounts to trick victims into revealing account credentials,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. “With the continued support of our private sector partners, we will be relentless in exposing Russian actors and cybercriminals and depriving them of the tools of their illicit trade.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Deputy Attorney General Monaco to receive God’s guidance in her role in the Justice Department.
- For Director Wray and other FBI officials as they seek to prevent phishing by the governments of hostile nations.
